The porch is another special area that needs to be framed while the house is being framed.
The post bases are laid out at the location that the post will go. The posts are installed on the post bases and braced so they don't fall over while the beam is being set.
The tops of the posts get a post cap that holds the beam. The beam is sized by an engineer and built on site by nailing lumber together. The beam has a double top plate installed just like the walls in the house.
The beam rests in the wall of the house where the porch connects to the house, this is called a beam pocket. The double top plates on the beam line up with the double top plates on the house walls.
Roof trusses are set on the post and beam construction.
The roof framing on the porch is finished just like the rest of the house.
