Using DIY dog run plans to build your own dog run allows you to customize your dogs space to fit your needs and the needs of your dog. DOGGY DOOR: You can install the dog door of your choice and size by purchasing the pet doors before construction begins and using the dimensions from the manufacturer to frame the door opening to the correct size. FENCING: Other customizations include being able to use the fencing you choose. You can use chaing link or welded wire mesh fencing. The wire mesh can be stapled to lumber rails or the kennel walls. KENNEL GATES: Gates can be made using 2x4 lumber for the frame and stapling wire mesh to it. Our plans show the fencing but do not show how to install it.
Several of our kennels are designed to house two dogs. The kennel can be separated down the middle on the inside using a wall or fence and also can be separated on the outside play area using fencing.
The size of your kennel is based on how much time your dog will spend each day in the kennel, the size of your dog and how much space you have to build the kennel. If your dog will be spending all day outside he will need a kennel that is larger so he has lots of room to run, exercise and play. If he only has enough room to sit and bark he will let you know he is not happy by sitting and barking until you come and get him. It is a good idea to build the largest dog kennel and run possible for your dog size.
The dog run is one of the most important elements of your kennel. It allows your pets to run and exercise while keeping them in a safe space to help keep your pet and you out of trouble.
Foundation: The dog kennel blueprints typically have two foundation designs included. It has the traditional shed framed floor over 4x6 treated lumber rails. Plans are also included for a concrete floor.
Flooring: Our plans show how to build the floor out of either wood or composite decking or concrete. There is also an option to leave the run area as grass, gravel or stones.
Siding: The most economical way to install siding on your dog kennel is to use 4x8 sheet siding like T1-11 or LP Smartside. Other sidings that are installed over O.S.B. and can be used are stucco, cement board sidings and vinyl siding.
Roofing: Our plans call for asphalt shingles. Most manufacturers sell roofing shingles that have a 25 year life span or higher. You can also install roofing to match your home or adjacent buildings. Many homeowners use metal roofing which can be installed on the roof sheeting just like the asphalt shingles.
Windows: The window shown on most of our kennel plans are an optional feature. You may also install windows on other walls in the enclosed area of the kennel.
